Earlier today, 9 September 2024, a juvenile baboon was severely injured by dogs in 15th Avenue, Kleinmond. Unfortunately, the baboon succumbed to its wounds later.
The mother initially stayed with the body, carrying it for a time before abandoning the carcass and went up to the mountain.
Reports also indicated that the alpha male was bitten as well, though it appears to be fine and retreated to the mountain with the rest of the troop.
This unfortunate incident shows once again the perils faced by baboons when they enter the urban interface and underscores the importance of minimising human-animal contact at all times.
Residents are reminded to please take their dogs indoors when they hear the vuvuzela warnings to prevent further attacks.
